AHE Newsletter June 2024

Jun 03, 2024

Principal’s Message

June has snuck up so quickly!  Our school wide focus for the month of June is “Valuing Diversity”. Coming up this month, we celebrate our students by recognizing their strengths, stretches and individual contributions to our school community. It has been a privilege to work with such a caring and enthusiastic group of students, parents and teachers this year. Wishing everyone within the AHE family an action-packed June and a relaxing summer holiday.

Intergenerational Learning

On June 1st, Intergenerational Day Canada, Revelstoke seniors and children are launching a month-long FIRE PREVENTION Poster initiative. Students and seniors in the community will be working together to create posters for distribution around the Revelstoke area. The posters will cite the importance of vigilance regarding fire risks, including fully extinguishing cigarette butts and campfires. This is an invitation to participate with us at schools, carehomes, the Revelstoke Seniors’ Centre and other community venues in a creative effort to protect our environment from the ravages of fire. Contact your neighbourhood school, the Revelstoke Seniors Centre or email Sharon at i2i@intergenerational.ca if you would like to join in the fun.

Screen Smart

June 1-8th is Screen Smart Week. Revelstoke’s Screen Smart Committee has planned a week’s worth of fun activities to encourage families to put the screen aside and be active. Excessive screen usage can lead to problems in social-emotional develop and studies suggest limiting screen time for children aged 2-5 to 1 hour during the week. For children ages 6 and older, we can limit screen time by encouraging healthy alternatives. Join in the fun!

Go By Bike

This year’s Go By Bike Week started off with a bang with 135 bikes in the bike rack this morning. We hope to beat last year’s record of 156! Some classes are signed up to count kilometers in an effort to win a class prize from Go By Bike, however, every student can participate by biking, walking or scootering to school. We will be recognizing those getting to school on their own power as well as noticing those following the expectations for bikes on the school ground and bike safety. Prizes include helmets, bike locks and water bottles and will be drawn on Friday June 7th.

PAC News

As we head into our last month of school PAC would like to take this time to thank all the parents and caregivers who volunteered their time during the school year with events like our book fair, hot lunches and sports day.  None of these events can happen without the volunteers.  PAC would also like to send out a big thank you to Save On Foods for the donations of all the pies at Thanksgiving and juice boxes for our hot lunches, Emo’s who always provides super yummy pizza, Kawakubo for our yummy sushi lunches and Subway for sport’s day lunch.

As PAC looks forward to next year we are on the hunt for a book fair coordinator or a community of 2-3 people to help us organize and run our book fair in October.   This is a very big fundraising event that PAC put on for the library.  If you are interested in being part of the community or even the coordinator please reach out to me at pacarrowheights@gmail.com or pop by the pac meeting on June 10th @6:30 in the AHE library and we can have a chat about it.

PAC will be hosting one more hot lunch on June 21st.  Keep an eye out in your kids planner for the order form.  Our last PAC meeting of the year will be on June 10th (not June 3rd like previously mentioned).  We will see you all there:  June 10th @6:30pm in the AHE Library. Child care is always provided.

Grade 7 Leaving Celebration

Our Grade 7 crew thoroughly enjoyed their two days at Sunnybrae last week, connecting with the other grade 7 students in the district. Thank you to our parent volunteers who made the trip possible! Our Grade 7 students will be moving on to Revelstoke Secondary next year and we are ready to celebrate their time at Arrow Heights. On June 19th , Arrow Heights will be hosting a Leaving Celebration at 6pm. Our celebration theme is “007”. Families are invited to attend to help send these students off to RSS. Best of luck to all our students in their future endeavors. We will miss you at AHE!

Kindergarten Orientation

Just as we say goodbye to 24 grade 7s, we welcome 18 new Kindergarten students! Our new Kindergarten students will be coming to AHE on June 13th for an orientation session. Our current Kindergarten students in Ms. Tedesco’s class will be dismissed at 11:30.

Yearbook

Thank you to Mrs. Draboczi for volunteering her time to put our yearbook together. She hada n Yearbook orders were due on May 31. The published books will be going home with students who purchased one in the last week of June.

Indigenous Education

The SD 19 Indigenous Education Department supports Indigenous students culturally, socially, and academically. These one-to-one supports are individually tailored to each student’s unique set of strengths and stretches. Throughout the district, the department offers monthly Indigenous-focused activities and field trips for classes K- 12 that emphasize Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being and encourage Reconciliation. This year we have had monthly visits with an Elder In-Residence from the Splatsín band, one of nine Secwepemc communities of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council as well as Nsylxcin language lessons with Mr. Donovan, our visiting Sinixt language teacher.

CARES

Expectations for how we act and treat each other are clear and we try to instill in students that this is practiced through our actions. Daily reminders and weekly focus areas help students to have a shared understanding of how our community supports one another and promotes connectedness. Our staff takes a collective, shared approach to owning all students as their own. Students are recognized daily for following our school-wide expectations with CARES Cards that are handed out by staff members and read out over the morning announcements. Students then “pay it forward” by placing their CARES cards in a collection for one of our two charities: The Revelstoke Women’s Shelter and The Community Foundation. At our final assembly on June 27th, representatives from each organization will be in attendance to receive a cheque from AHE.                                                                  Well done AHE students!

Year End Assembly and Class Awards

The end of the year is a time to reflect and celebrate on the strengths of each of our students. Teachers will be recognizing each student by presenting individual awards in class. Watch for a note in the planner to find out the time and day your child’s classroom will be holding their celebration.

Our final assembly and awards is scheduled for June 27th at 11:30. Please join us to celebrate our 2023-24 school year!

Sports Day and District Track & Field

A huge shout out to our students for their support of one another in Sports Day events. We now look ahead to Districts for Grade 4 to 7 students who qualified during our sports day. Each student will be receiving their schedules and will be taking the bus to the events. Please ask them about it!

Field events (shot put, long jump & high jump) will be held during school hours on Tuesday June 4th from 9 am to 12:00 pm @ CPE.  Mrs. Mair, Mr. Cadegan and Mrs. Gadbois will chaperone. Track events will be on Thursday, June 6th from 9 am to 12:00pm @ Centennial Fields. Good luck to all!

School Organization for 2024-25

As we wind down our school year, we are also busy gearing up for our plans for next year. Due to changing enrolment numbers, we will be working on class organizations and teaching assignments until the end of the year.  We also remind you it is our practice not to publish this information until just before the first day of classes in the new school year.
