Mid Month News for September 2024
Mid-Month News
Our first week back has been a huge success! Thanks to those of you who participated in our Handbook Hunt. Prizes were drawn this morning and delivered to 10 happy recipients. Please continue to use the Student Handbook (found in the front of the planners) for future reference to programs and expectations at AHE.
School start-up is a very busy time, so we chose to send out a mid-month update to help everyone with the overload of information! For October, we will be back to our monthly newsletter at the beginning of the month, posted on our website.
PAC Meeting
Just a reminder that our first Parent Advisory Council meeting is on Monday Sept. 16th at 6:30 in the AHE library. Meetings usually last for one hour, and childcare is provided. Joining the PAC is a great way to stay involved in our AHE community of learners.
Whole School Outing Friday, Sept. 27
Some of you may have noticed the new transformer box placed in our staff parking area. To make a long story short, it has to be moved (!!!) and to accommodate for the Hydro team and the re-paving of the parking lot, work will begin on Friday, September 27 and continuing through Monday Sept. 30.
As our power will be out on Sept. 27th, our staff has collaborated to plan a whole school outing that day that both meets our learning goals and adds a bit of team building fun for our students.
We will be bussing all students to Centennial Park (busses leaving at 8:35) for morning activities, including the Terry Fox Run on the Greenbelt and Indigenous Education activities in honour of Orange Shirt Day. It will be very special for our students to walk the paths and spend some time along Swift River, as we recognize people who attended Residential Schools.
We will have lunch picnic-style around Centennial Fields and the Inukshuk around 11:00 and then will walk to town where we will attend the Roxy Theater for the afternoon! Students will be watching Inside Out 1 which is very fitting, not only with our school goals, but with our recent ProD with Hannah Beach.
The Roxy has been very accommodating to our needs for this afternoon and is even offering popcorn and a drink for each student! Please let your child’s teacher know if there is a reason your child should not be offered popcorn and a drink! We will be reaching out to those families of students with known dietary needs.
Teachers will be carrying contact lists should we need to contact any parents and making calls as necessary from their private cell phones. Bathrooms at Centennial Fields will be open for our use starting at 8 a.m. and Mrs. Pendergast will be on site with us to take care of any first aid needs.
Busses will bring us back to school just after 2:00 for dismissal. As we expect the parking lot to still be under construction, our primary classes will be dismissed from the lower field.
Things to remember:
– Please try to arrive on time, as the building will be empty of students and staff after 8:45.
– Remember to pack a snack, water bottle, hearty lunch for the day.
– Students need to be prepared for the Terry Fox Run and walking. Wear appropriate footwear.
– We will be outside rain or shine, so please dress for the weather!
– Wear orange!
***Parent volunteers for the morning will be welcome and appreciated! Please reach out to your classroom teacher is you are able to help.
This situation is one of a kind, and we are trying to be flexible! We have probably forgotten some details, so updates will be provided closer to the date.
DOT Day
You may have noticed on our school calendar that Monday, Sept. 16 is International Dot Day. This is a day is focussed on the importance of having a Growth Mindset. Rather than celebrating on one day, we have decided to have a week-long school-wide focus on Growth Mindset at AHE. Students who are caught wearing dots on their clothing will be recognized for their enthusiasm with a CARES card.
Lost and Found!
A bike has been found on the school grounds and has been left here for several days. If you are missing a bike, please reach out to pmair@sd19.bc.ca with the make and description to see if it might be yours!
School Supplies and Agendas
Payments for school supplies and agendas are still being collected. Supplies are $37 and agendas are $8. Payment can be made by cash or cheque to Mrs. Pendergast at the front office. We know that things can be very expensive and sometimes it is hard to make ends meet. Please reach out to pmair@sd19.bc.ca if you need some support to help meet these costs.
Verification Forms and Consent
Please complete and return all verification and consent forms to Mrs. Pendergast as soon as possible.
